UN MDG 4 Health
Implementation Strategy:
Over a one year period, the three universities involved in this proposal development, namely University of British Columbia, University of Hong Kong, and Tec de Monterrey University, intend to:
::
Engage health professional students in our respective universities to join a UN MDG course implementation committee to partner with them in the pilot implementation of this course
Develop a full course with a student’s guide to this course based on the syllabus outline articulated in Appendix I
Develop a web portal where students will be registered, course materials can be distributed, course surveys and evaluation can be conducted, student projects and assignments can be submitted and displayed, and discussion/dialogue of course content can be facilitated through on line forum
Construct an evaluation framework to assess the outcome of the pilot implementation, and use these results to guide the modification of the course content after year 1
Engage other universities beyond the original 3 to prompt uptake of this course (for example, all three universities belong to a global consortium of universities under the Universitas 21 (U21) consortium. We intend to engage other U21 universities within the first year to raise awareness, and eventually invite other U21 members to take up this course over the next three years), e.g. Palermo Masters
Disseminate and publish our endeavour in conference presentations and peer reviewed journals to increase exposure and awareness of this course
We anticipate that this multi-pronged strategy in our first year will lead to the successful establishment of the course. Based on these successes, we will continue to identify sustaining tactics to further propagate this course and help build lasting capacity.
Beneficiaries:
This initiative will benefit multiple groups including:
Health sciences students in academic institutions who to date have little exposure to the MDGs, their targets, and the philosophy and ethos behind their development and consensus
Faculty members of academic institutions in raising their awareness
Academic institutions in being able to contribute meaningfully to knowledge translation and capacity building in MDG attainment
United Nations, WHO, and other institutions in mutually gaining strong partnership in advancing the MDG cause
The communities where they can benefit from increasing number of student involvement and have direct benefits from their involvement towards attaining MDG targets
