Objectives:
Our objective is to put together a course intended to contribute to training of health sciences students in their awareness, understanding, internalization and personal adoption of the MDGs in their local and global practice and learning. The proposed title of our training module is “The Health Component in the UN Millennium Development Goals: A Guide to Education and Training”.
Our proposed training module will have the following objectives for the intended primary audience, who will be health sciences students (both pre-licensure and post-licensure), faculty members:
Attitudinal objectives:
To appreciate the importance of equity in health
To understand the rationale for U.N. to develop and build consensus towards MDGs
To raise awareness of the MDGs and their 2015 targets
To appreciate that individuals can make a difference in the implementation of MDGs
To take on the ownership of MDGs as part of global citizenship
To make the commitment to vivify MDGs in their local and global activities in health
To recognize the importance of social accountability of health professionals towards the communities in which they practice, locally and globally
To realize that multi-professional and multi-disciplinary partnership is essential for realization of MDG targets and beyond
To motivate the individuals in this course to bias towards action and outcomes, not simply knowledge acquisition
To promote understanding of the MDGs in the UN and other non-health circles
Knowledge objectives:
To appreciate health in the context of wellness for both individuals and their communities
To understand and know the 8 MDGs and their corresponding targets, whether purely health or other development fields
To realize the compromise and consensus in arriving at these 8 MDGs amongst developing and developed nations
To appreciate how historically these MDGs came to be
To visualize the correlation of the MDGs with the determinants of health, public health, and globalization
To appreciate the challenges of the implementation of MDGs
To recognize the evolving dynamics of MDGs as a continuing journey towards achieving the ideal
To understand the current endeavour and progress in research and evaluation of MDGs
Skills Objectives:
To become knowledge broker of MDG implementation and translation
To enrich self development in MDG internalization through behavioural manifestations of MDG in global projects and in local health practices
To stimulate the interest and action in carrying out relevant research pertaining to MDGs
To flexibly apply the MDG framework and lens towards their applications
To identify similar academic endeavours and collaborate with them, e.g. Palermo Masters
